Authentic Japanese restaurant with friendly, efficient service for solid price

The food at Izakaya Wa is always fresh and great-tasting. Portion sizes are OK and prices are very reasonable for the portion and quality - especially for the River Oaks area.

We’ve often enjoyed their daily half-udon / half-rice lunch specials but their curries, katsu and sushi are all top-notch. I love the sushi rice they use.

Izakaya Wa is one of my top 3 favourite restaurants. All the food is so delicious and has a seasoned taste. I definitely recommend the torimune fried skewers, one order comes with 2 generously sized skewers, they were so good I had to get 3 orders! I also recommend the sushi dinner, all the fish is so fresh and the salmon has so much fat and the bluefin tuna was amazing also. You should definitely come here. I don’t live in Houston and whenever we come here for a couple days, we always come to Izakaya Wa.

Last night my wife and I wanted to try this place ever since she started working next-door at Leo’s..
As we walked in the ambience seem nice very cozy setting. As we waited for a minute for the hostess to show up we told her that party of two so she grabbed menus walked by a table and just threw them on a table and just kept walking we didn’t know if we had to follow her or she was setting a table.
Then she comes back and she points at the table where she threw the menus and I said no I would like to sit next to my wife not across from her so she grabbed the same menus walked toward the back and threw them on a table and kept walking we followed her to I guess a water station she turned around she tells us’ What happened ‘I said you didn’t show us our table, you just threw the menus on a table and walk away.
Service starts with the Host, her Attitude and lack of hospitality made us decide to go elsewhere.
We ended up going to AKA sushi on Alabama where we know we would get great service.
We just wanted to try something different but it’s people like the host who sets the tone for the rest of the night. The food look good and I’m sure it tasted great but we took our chances elsewhere.

We keep hoping this gets better. But we’re done.we eat at the bar. Wine for her. Beer for me. Wife asks the bartender when the Chardonnay was opened “2 days ago”. Was the answer. “ can you open a new bottle?” “No”. See ya. Last time. Next time we think of this place we will audible to red lion.

Went for lunch and left more than satisfied. Would definitely recommend to everyone I know. Am planning to come back for dinner and try the cool new appetizers.

I really enjoyed my experience here. My boyfriend and I stopped in about 30 minutes before close on a Sunday evening to place a to go order. We asked if we could sit at the bar and order a drink while waiting for our food. Although they were only 30 minutes from closing, the server was friendly and extremely attentive. He also offered us some free sake, which we gladly accepted. The food and sushi offerings here seem more authentic than other options, which I appreciate. We’ll definitely be back!

Great place for tapas. The staff was very nice. We sat at the bar and our bartender/waitress was awesome with the recommendations. I recommend to go fairly early to try out the whole menu. Everything we did order was great. Can't wait to try out other items that we missed.
